WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will learn to use computers efficiently for :
Word processing, databases, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, data communication including electronic
mail and combining information prepared using different parts of an integrated package.
You will learn : To retrieve, process, analyse, store
and present information.
To design and write simple computer programs.
WHAT SHOULD I HAVE ALREADY DONE?

NZQA qualification : National Certificate in Computing Level 2 and 3.
HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?
Practical and written tests, practical assignments and checklists. No examination, no homework.
When you sit an assessment you will be classed as "achieved" or "not achieved". If you are still learning, you will be able to "resit". A "resit" may mean taking all
or part of an equivalent but different test, or resubmitting an assessment. The time spent learning for a resit may mean missing some other topic but it will ensure that you can work at your own pace and earn credit for those units you complete.
Level 3 topic skills will only be assessed if you have passed level 2.
WHAT ARE THE COURSE COSTS?
If you qualify for a National Certificate in Computing
(NCC) Level 2, you will also have to pay a fee to the
New Zealand Qualifications Authority for the issue of a certificate.

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE?

Environmental Science is the study of our environment and in particular our impact on it.

WHY SHOULD YOU STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE?

Environmental Science is an ‘applied science'. It has become a theme of everyday life, from global warming, waste disposal, pollution to energy for the future.

An understanding of these, and other, important issues is essential for you to become a responsible and valuable member of society.

WHAT SHOULD I HAVE ALREADY STUDIED?

You should have attained both the numeracy and literacy components of NCEA level 1. Gained Achieved or better in the following level 1 science standards: 90186 - Carry out a practical investigation, and any one of 90187, 90188 and 90189.

NCEA Science Level 1 on approval of the Head of Department Science or the Deputy Principal.

WHERE COULD ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE LEAD ME?

Every day we here of new initiative, regulations and guidelines linked to our environment. The environment is "big business", with a growing range of employment opportunities, both here in New Zealand and further a field.

 

Every major industry will at some point employ some form of environmentalist, mining, landfill, waste management, food processing, Department of Conservation, Department of Fisheries and Food, Regional Councils, legal firms, Forestry and so on - the list is almost endless!

In addition to career opportunities education in this area will give you the authority and ability to be heard on environmental issues that affect your community locally and globally.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Water - possibly the most important resource, waste, habitat maintenance and destruction, pollution, geology, cartography, ecology, sustainability, weather, environmental law and much more. The study will be class based with practical and field studies when appropriate.

Gateway opens a new pathway from school to the world of work. It's a great opportunity to blend school study with workplace learning and experience. Units are assessed in the workplace, counting towards national qualifications.

GATEWAY - is being made available to senior school students.
- delivers hands-on practical learning that leads to nationally recognised qualifications.
- builds students' workplace experience, helping them move smoothly from school to work.
- is managed through delegated facilitators, customising the learning and selecting the students to
complement the employers' businesses.
- is coordinated and funded by the Tertiary Education Commission as part of the new tertiary education landscape.

BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Firstly, students must select an area of employment that they are interested in. For example - automotive, building, agriculture, retail, sport and recreation, forestry, catering, hospitality, early childhood. The student will be expected to study for qualifications in their chosen career path. This is usually in the form of Industry Unit Standards.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Students are selected through an interview process with input from their Dean and classroom teachers. Main requirements are commitment, reliability, responsibility. In other words, the student should have a good work ethic and have a career path that they would like to follow.

Gateway helps students build their skills for employment, working in real workplaces on real tasks. It gives opportunities to try out potential careers and build links to ITOs, Modern Apprenticeships and workplaces. Not only can it lead to a qualification in the chosen career but students could gain employment or further training.

HOW IS THIS COURSE ASSESSED?
Students will be assessed mainly in their workplace by industry assessors. This requires the student to spend the equivalent of a school day in the workplace.
