Dyslexia Dismantled

Laughton King, an Educational Psychologist and a dyslexic, spoke to over 100 teachers last week about dyslexia giving those present a better insight of the difficulties of learning and living as a dyslexic.
During his presentation he explained that most people see dyslexia as a reading and writing problem, but in fact it is more a difficulty of internal processing, which impacts on a person's ability to process thoughts (pictures) into words. He explained that the more a person's pictorial brain dominates over their linguistic brain, the more difficulty they will have with the language based education system.
He likened a dyslexic to running on diesel while 85% of people who were not dyslexic ran on petrol. He explained that there is nothing wrong with their dyslexic brain, but that, "Like a diesel engine they have a natural style that works perfectly - as long as it is fed diesel rather than petrol". He explained that most people use internal dialogue (self talk) to perform a range of functions, such as to remember, prepare or process information. A Dyslexic is more reliant on one factor, the ‘pictorial' brain to perform these functions. In a nutshell the dyslexic person has less natural ability to use language as a thinking tool.
